Short Advice:
Short Tip : Switch from 3G to 2G (or EDGE) when you don't have access to a charger and need your phone to stay alive longer.
Explanation:
If your 3G phone allows you to switch from 3G to 2G you can use this when you need to increase its standby time until you get the chance to charge it.
3G is simply a much powerful communication technology that provides faster data transfer. You can see the difference in speed when you are surfing the web or steaming videos (like Youtube) and audio (like internet radio). But the truth is that you don't need this power all the time, do you?
As a result of how this technology operates it actually consumes more power from your battery.
So if you are out and have no access to a charger, yet you need your phone to stay on for as long as possible switch to 2G.
Notice that simple IM applications such as Whatsapp, BlackBerry Messenger and others can operate on 2G since the text messages are really small in bytes. So you wouldn't feel any difference (Unless you're exchanging photos and so.)
Also notice that some mobile apps (such as Maps/Navigation apps) can only operate on 3G.
One last tip: Usually the mobile network company operate 2G and 3G in all the areas they cover. But in very VERY rare cases it would only cover 3G. So if you switch to 2G just make sure that you have reception.
